     HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PEP, entails taking antiretroviral medications (ARVs) after potential exposure to HIV to prevent infection. Commencing PEP immediately is crucial, ideally within 72 hours following a potential exposure incident. While PEP is not 100% effective, it can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission if taken correctly and promptly after exposure. Who need PEP?

      PEP is typically recommended for individuals who have been potentially exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours through activities such as:

  1. Unprotected sexual intercourse with someone known to be HIV-positive or of unknown HIV status.

  2. Needlestick injuries or other occupational exposures to HIV-infected blood or body fluids.

  3. Sharing needles or other drug-injecting equipment with someone who is HIV-positive or of unknown HIV status.

      It's important to note that taking PEP should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by a healthcare provider. Additionally, PEP should not be used as a substitute for consistent and proper use of other HIV prevention methods, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or safer sex practices.

Can I get HIV PEP over the counter in Thailand?

     No, PEP is not available over the counter in Thailand. It is a prescription medication that must be obtained from a healthcare provider following proper evaluation and assessment.

ใครควรกินยาเป๊ป (PEP)

       ยาเป๊ป (PEP) แนะนำในผู้ที่มีความเสี่ยงในการติดเชื้อ HIV โดยมีความเสี่ยงต่อไปนี้ภายใน 72 ชั่วโมง

  1. มีเพศสัมพันธ์โดยไม่ได้ป้องกันกับผู้ที่ติดเชื้อ HIV หรือไม่ทราบว่าคู่นอนติดเชื้อหรือไม่

  2. ถุงยากแตก หรือฉีกขาด

  3. ถูกฉีดยาเข็มตำ

  4. ใช้เข็มฉีดยาร่วมกับผู้อื่น

      อย่างไรก็ตามควรปรึกษาแพทย์ก่อนรับยา เพื่อประเมินความเสี่ยง โรคประจำตัว และพิจารณาผลข้างเคียง ยาเป๊ปใช้ในกรณีฉุกเฉินเท่านั้น หากมีความเสี่ยงบ่อยแนะนำให้ใช้ยาเพร็พ (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) เพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อ
